Overlay and Inlay Clad Metal

Overlay, Inlay, Edgelay, and Corelay clad materials allow precious and non-precious metals or alloys to be metallurgically bonded to a substrate, which can be a single alloy or an overlay clad combination.  Inlay stripes are precisely positioned at the location specified by our customers.   Inlays can be placed on one or both sides, at the edge, or any distance from the edge.  When multiple overlays or inlays are specified, they can be of different thicknesses, widths, and materials.   Clad metal offers minimized use of precious metals, combination of properties not available in a single alloy, and longer life than electroplated components.

Contact Tape (Electrical)

Contact tapes are precision formed overlays designed to meet the requirements of high-speed, automatic welding equipment for the manufacture of electrical contact assemblies.  By precisely controlling the thickness of the component materials, a composite material system can be designed that minimizes precious metal usage, maximizes conductivity, and provides a resistive backing for welding to form a contact assembly.  Weld projections can be formed as rails, knurls, diamonds, waffles, t-shapes, and custom profiles.  Contact tapes are typically traverse wound on plastic spools.

Polymet’s V-Slitting capabilities produce contact tapes with a width-to-thickness ratio as low as 2:1 while eliminating the burr-up, burr-down condition resulting from conventional slitting methods.  After V-Slitting, the material is form rolled to provide a precise contact profile and to form a close tolerance rail or patterned backing to assure consistent weldability.

Thermostat Metals

Thermostat metal spiral and helix coils are formed in-house from our thermostat metal for a wide variety of customer applications including thermometers, gauges, heating, refrigeration, basement ventilation, and automotive where high rates of thermal deflection and mechanical force is required.

Made from 0.004” to 0.125” thick TM, coils are made with a wide range of inside and outside diameters along with inside and outside tab configurations to suit our customer’s performance and space requirements.   We offer automatic, semi-automatic, and hand-wound coils depending on volume and shape requirements.

Assemblies are made by brazing, welding, staking, and crimping the components required to meet your specifications.  We look forward to working with you to determine the optimal design and cost.

Conductive Spring Materials

The HS series conductive spring clad materials are designed for current-carrying spring applications, offering 25% to 58% IACS conductivity as a cost-effective alternative to conventional spring materials. Suitable for applications traditionally using beryllium copper, stainless steel, and phosphor bronze alloys, HS Series materials combine C10200 copper with high-strength alloys like 301 and 321 stainless steel, 1065 steel, and C51000 phosphor bronze. This blend provides high mechanical strength and unique characteristics.

When designing with HS Series materials, consider factors such as conductivity, weldability, solderability, strength in bending, fatigue resistance, and corrosion resistance. For detailed information, please contact us. Sizes range up to 0.050” in thickness and 3.500” in width.

Precious Metal Wire

Polymet draws fine wire in gold and Palmet alloys. Wire is produced to meet the precise specifications required for elongation, minimum break load, and tensile strength.

Gold wire is available in regular strength or high strength versions for thermosonic and ultrasonic bonding applications. Starting with high purity gold, raw material is cast to a highly controlled chemical composition to meet the exact mechanical properties needed for the customer’s application. Popular sizes range from 0.0005” to 0.0020”diameters. Larger diameters are also available.

7091 and 7075 Palmet alloys (Pd, Pt, Au, Ag) are available in wire diameters from 0.002” to 0.020” diameters.

All wire products are available in 100 ft to 2,000 ft single and multiple strand configurations on industry standard spools.

Musical Fret Wire

Used by the world’s most renowned musical instrument makers, Polymet fret wire is specified in most models of high-quality string instruments.  Most replacement frets in the marketplace are also made using Polymet fret wire.

Starting with the purest nickel-silver wire, Polymet’s fret wires are formed into the precise fret profile specified by our customer in a high precision, continuous, multiple step process to shape the fret wire to the proper surface quality, dimensional accuracy and aesthetic appearance.  The wire is then wound into coils or cut-to-length to the customer’s specification.

Clad Metals How We Bond

At NN Inc. Polymetallurgical LLC, our multiple bonding technologies allow us to select the best process for the materials to be bonded. Hot bonding is used for extra thick and brittle materials. Cold bonding is used for more ductile materials especially precious metals.

Controlled Atmosphere Bonding for Clad Metals

To assure the best possible bond, our hot bond process is performed in a controlled atmosphere that prevents oxidation or the introduction of impurities at the bond interface.

Cold bonding is utilized for materials best clad without heat.
